Posters, trademarks, publicity, illustrations. Born Wilhelm Heinrich Hartmuth Pfeil 13 February 1893 in Höchst a.M. 1910-14: studied at the Munich Kunstgewerbeschule: a teacher was Julius Diez. Pilot in First World War. From 1924: lived in Darmstadt. 1924-40: designed for the printing firm Roetherdruck, Darmstadt. 1924-41: designed for the journal Darmstädter Tageblatt. 1928-9: head of the printing and graphics class, Kunsthochschule, Frankfurt a.M. From 1929: designed for the printing firm Fichtel & Sachs, Schweinfurt. 1941: awarded Culture Prize, City of Darmstadt. From 1948: designed for the journal Darmstädter Echo.
