Biography
Type designs, publicity, book arts. Born 29 November 1894 in Halle (Saale). 1912-14: studied at the Leipzig Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe: a teacher was Walter Tiemann and Horst Schulze. His studies interrupted by military service, during which he was wounded; he returned to the Akademie, 1919-20, and was in Tiemann’s Meisterklasse. From 1920: worked at Poeschel & Trepte, book printer, then for numerous publishers. From 1925: chairman of the designers’ association Bund Deutsche Gebrauchsgrafiker (BDG). Designed the typefaces Elegant Grotesk (1928, Stempel), Phalanx (1930-1, Genzsch & Heyse), Halbfette Phalanx (1932, Genzsch & Heyse), Florida (1932, Woellmer), Elan (1937, Stempel), Gabriele (1938, Woellmer) and Gladiator (1940, Schriftguss). His last years, while living in Kornwestheim (Wttbg.), were spent in interior design and decoration. Died 21 May 1958 in Ludwigsburg.
