Gustav Stresow

Biography

Book designs, writer, publisher. Born 22 August 1910. Trainee compositor at the Bauer Type Foundry, Frankfurt a.M. 1932: visiyed New York where he became acquainted with many printers and publishers. 1936/7: worked on the Penrose Annual while staying in England; head of foreign advertising after return to Germany. 1938: director of printing for Walter Cyliax, Vienna, followed by military service. He found his true position at Prestel Verlag, Munich, where he designed many books, creating ‘the Prestel book’: a harmony of setting, layout and binding, often winning awards in the Most Beautiful Books of the Year exhibitions.
