Biography
Lino- and woodcut illustrations, posters. Born 13 April 1903 in Essen. 1920-22: studied at Essen Kunstgewerbeschule: teachers included Wilhelm Pötter and Hermann Kätelhön, then at the Düsseldorf Akademie where he was a Meisterschüler of Paul Junghaans. c1925: worked as a graphic artist in Düsseldorf. May 1928: joined the NSDAP, and became member of the SA. Designed posters; other graphic work included that for the weekly newspaper of the Düsseldorf Gau (area) of the NSDAP, Die Neue Front. His engravings in wood and lino, often incorporating quotations, in the style of the Old Masters. c1938: painted murals for hostels of the Hitler Youth and of the SA. 1940: settled in Bendestorf, near Hamburg. 1941: volunteers for military service on the Eastern Front. c1945: captured by the British and interned for a year. After the war he designed for publicity. 1970: awarded Ring of Honour of the Deutsches Kulturwerk Europäischen Geistes. Died 5 January 1978 in Bendestorf and buried there at the Heidefriedhof.
