Emil Preetorius

Biography

Book designs, illustrations, stage-sets, posters, trademarks. Collector of East Asian art. Born 21 June 1883 in Mainz. After receiving his doctorate in law he attended the Munich Kunstgewerbeschule, but was mainly self-taught. 1907-8: contributed to the journals Jugend and Simplicissimus. His early work influenced by Beardsley. 1909: founded the Munich Schule für Illustration und Buchgewerbe with Paul Renner. 1910: director of the Munich Lehrwerkstätten. From 1911: humorous illustrations and silhouette headings appeared frequently in Der Bücherwurm. 1914: founder member of Die Sechs (The Six), a group of six Munich poster artists. From c1918: worked for the publisher Kurt Wolff. c1920-22: designed emergency money (Notgeld). From 1923: stage designs for German opera houses including Munich, Dresden, Berlin. By 1925: designer/art director of the fine-art journal Monatshefte für Bücherfreunde und Graphiksammler. From 1926: taught classes in book art and theatre design at the Munich Staatschule für angewandte Kunst (earlier: Kunstgewerbeschule). 1928: taught at the Munich Akademie der Bildenden Künste and Berlin Kunsthochschule; director of scenic design at Berlin Staatsoper. By 1931: member of the Verein deutsche Buchkünstler E.V. 1931-42: chief set designer, Bayreuth. July 1944: his library of 10,000 books destroyed in air raid. 1933-61: stage designer for opera houses throughout Europe including La Scala, Milan, and Staatsoper, Vienna. 1950: President, Society for Oriental Art. 1953-c1968: President, Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts (Munich). 1954: member of PEN; honorary doctorate from universities of Munich, Mainz and Giessen (1958). 1960-65: President of Gesellschaft der Bibliophilen. He often wrote about oriental art, and his collection was frequently exhibited. Died 27 January 1973 in Munich much honoured (his correct form of address, in the German style: Professor Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. h. c. Emil Preetorius).
