Biography
Wood engravings, book jackets, posters, stamps, illustrations, publicity, ex-libris. Born 17 February 1893 in Stuttgart. 1912-14, 1919-21: studied at the Munich Kunstgewerbeschule: a teacher was Julius Diez. After the First World War he freelanced, his clients including the publishers Eugen Diederichs, Georg Müller and Delphin Verlag. 1921: his type ornaments and borders (Deutscher Schmuck)and typeface Ege-Schrift issued by Genzsch & Heyse, Hamburg. 1925: his typeface Basalt issued by Genzsch & Heyse. 1925-35: head of the Munich Lehrwerkstätten (apprentice workshops; formerly the Debschitz-Schule). 1927-1958: director, commercial art department, Munich Meisterschule für Deutschlands Buchdrucker (today the Akademie für das grafische Gewerbe) until his retirement. From August 1950: art director of the journal of commercial art Gebrauchsgraphik. 1973: awarded the City of Munich Medal of Honour. Died 10 August 1978 in Munich.
