Arno Drescher

Biography

Posters, type designs, book bindings, banknotes. Born 17 March 1882 in Auerbach/Vogtland. 1905-7: studied at Dresden Akademie für Kunstgewerbe after initial training and work as a teacher. 1910-40: taught painting and graphic design at the Dresden Kunstgewerbeschule. October 1940-45: taught at the Leipzig Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe (director 1941-5). 1945-60: freelance in Leipzig. From 1960: freelance in Braunschweig. Drescher designed the typefaces Energos, Fundamental, Arabella (Ludwig Wagner; 1936-9), Onyx (Schelter & Giesecke; by 1937), Antiqua 505 (1955-60) and Super-Grotesk, Deutsche-Eilschrift (Woellmer), Helion, Duplex, Manutius (Wagner). Died 1 June 1971 in Braunschweig.
